Studying Online

Changing Educational Landscape

Internet-based and digital technologies are fundamentally changing the educational landscape. Faster broadband, ever more powerful mobile devices, ubiquitous social media, streaming video, cloud-based services and vast amounts of easily accessed and often free educational and instructional content have changed learner perceptions of how learning happens. On the other side of the equation feature rich learning management systems and other delivery platforms together with user friendly authoring tools and the affordances of the web itself to support online collaboration and new pedagogical approaches offer opportunities for educational institutes to meet a concomitant demand for courses that are online, flexible and available on demand.

State of the art facilities for online learning

In this context the Cork Institute of Technology has, over the past three years, aimed to provide a successful, flexible and dynamic system to facilitate the development and provision of a number of online programmes. To date the institute has invested in excess of €3m to support this aim, including development of a world-class private cloud infrastructure and a state of the art e-learning centre. The latter, significantly, includes the provision of 6 “e-learning studios” or live e-learning booths to offer bespoke spaces for individual lecturers to deliver live or synchronous classes. In parallel the department of Technology Enhanced Learning has secured significant funding at national and European level to widen and deepen our understanding of how internet and digital technologies can best be leveraged for teaching and learning purposes.

Our Online Programmes

The number of online programmes offered by Cork Institute of Technology has steadily increased over the past three years and the Institute now offers online programmes across a range of disciplines.
