Who is this course aimed at?

Anyone seeking to up-skill or reskill by adding digital currency to their existing portfolios or work practices across a broad range of job roles and industries.

As such, this two semester online programme may appeal to those lacking a background in these areas who are either (a) in a position of sourcing or contracting digital media expertise or (b) considering taking the first step in re-skilling to work directly in the digital media design and development field.

In the latter context the award is accepted as a bridging route for applicants who are interested in undertaking the department’s 60 credit Master of Arts in E-learning Design & Development but who do not possess the pre-requisite digital media experience or qualification.

What skills will I learn?

The course will cover the fundamentals of a range of media types, formats and processes. Students will understand how video production, animation, web development and design houses work, and will design and develop their own projects in the programme. You’ll look at how to devise Creative Strategies and understand how the industry delivers digital content effectively to multiple platforms and multiple audiences.

What are the benefits of doing the course online?

It offers the opportunity to study within your own schedule and at a location of their choosing. Using state of the art education technology, students will have live access to MTU lecturers and a range of other communication and collaboration tools. Students, in essence, will be taught and supported in their learning using the very same tools and technologies that they will use later in the digital workplace.

Every day people watch hundreds of millions of hours of video and animation online, interact with digital interfaces on different devices and purchase digital goods.

Other noteworthy elements:

The programme draws from extensive in-house expertise and facilities within the Department of Media Communications with regard to digital media production and post-production, programming and application development, user experience research, interaction design etc. The Department is home to a number of cognate programmes, in particular the BA (Honours) in Creative Digital Media, the MA in Journalism & New Media, the MA in Public Relations with New Media, and the MA in E-learning Design and Development.

Programme Delivery

The programme is delivered entirely online using many of the same tools and technologies which also form the course curriculum. All registered students will also be given access to a virtualised desktop which provides all their multimedia software and remote storage requirements for the duration of the course. This means the programme may appeal to those who, for whatever reasons, cannot commit to attending regular face-to-face lectures and labs or who simply find the flexibility and convenience of studying at a distance attractive.

Admission Requirements

Candidates are required to have already completed a level 8 degree or equivalent. Basic computer and keyboard skills are essential. Familiarity with social media and media sharing platforms and services are desirable too, as well as an interest at least in video production, graphic design and/or interactive media.
