MTU Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL)
Innovation in Digital Learning
My name is Gearóid Ó Súilleabháin, I’m the head of the Department of Technology Enhanced Learning in the Munster Technological University with responsibility for developing and managing the university’s online and blended mode programmes, supporting the mainstream use of technology enhanced learning by staff and students and conducting ongoing research in the field.
I’ve been working at the intersection of learning and technology for nearly thirty years, during which time I have led out on a range of large-scale EU-funded and commercial ed-tech and technology enhanced learning projects. I have also published and presented widely on an array of related research topics. I chair the Ed Tech and E-learning research group in MTU and I’m the course director for MTU’s online MA in E-learning Design and Development.
As the Lead E-learning Designer/Developer at MTU's Department of Technology Enhanced Learning, my role encompasses leading a team of learning technologists and overseeing a broad spectrum of e-learning projects and services for both our mainstream programs and various commercial and research projects. With 19 years of experience in the e-learning field, I've undertaken complex projects that have deepened my expertise in both the higher education and commercial sectors. Collaborating closely with project owners, consultants, and subcontractor teams has been instrumental in honing my design, development, and problem-solving skills—assets I consider vital for managing e-learning projects effectively.
My expertise spans project management, e-learning systems management, learning experience design, online teaching, training and assessment, creative digital media design (including video and motion graphics design), e-learning authoring, and instructional design. I hold a BA Honours in Multimedia and an MA in E-learning Design and Development. Beyond my development and leadership roles, I contribute to the academic field as a lecturer on the Master of Arts in E-learning Design and Development and the Masters in Teaching and Learning programs at MTU Cork.
I’ve been working as an E-learning Designer and Researcher since 2007 having completed my BA (Hons) in Multimedia, now Creative Digital Media, in Cork Institute of Technology. My work focuses on the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning in the University and the development of bespoke digital learning experiences for a range of audiences, including as part of commercial and EU-funded projects. I also lecture on the university’s MA in E-learning Design and Development.
I hold an MA for research focusing on the affordances of digital media to help children with learning disabilities and much of my research revolves around digital accessibility and inclusive teaching and learning practices at all levels of education.
I am a digital education developer and lecturer who has been working in the digital education and higher education space for over 17 years, across a range of roles, contexts and environments.
I hold a BA (Hons) in creative digital media, as well as a MA in e-learning design and development (for which I was awarded "Best Taught Masters Degree Student, CIT Crawford College of Art & Design"), a level 8 certificate in designing innovative services, and a level 8 certificate in cyberpsychology. I am also an Advance HE Senior Fellow.
In addition to these formal qualifications, I regularly pursue CPD opportunities to continuously expand my skillset.
I am an ardent believer in the transformative power of education to break down barriers and expand horizons. As such, a unifying theme within my research relates to the role of education as an egalitarian force at an individual and societal level.
Unlike my multimedia colleagues, my expertise resides in a much less creative field: project administration and finances. Since 2003, I have been working part-time with this great team providing them support for the running of all their activities. I hold an MA in Applied Languages and Business Studies.
I am an instructional designer and content developer and have been working in MTU for over 3 years. I previously studied at MTU (then named CIT) and have a BA in Multimedia and MA in E-Learning Design and Development.
I was a technical writer at a large multi-national company for 3.5 years, so I'm passionate about using my technical writing skills, instructional design knowledge, and multimedia experience to create engaging educational material.
I studied Multimedia at CIT where in 2015, I was part of the team that were winners in the global pitch video category, runners up in both the UX challenge and the project blueprint challenge and Irish national winners in the world citizenship category of the Microsoft Imagine Cup. I graduated with a first class honors bachelor's degree in Multimedia and was awarded student of the my graduating year in 2017.
After graduating, I spent 4 years working for an international automation company as an Interactive system designer where I was tasked to develop interactive training based applications on specific technical requirements for the global customer network. This included creating web-based interactive 3D models, AR and VR applications for individual and group based learning.
The possibility to expand my knowledge in UX design, instructional design and game-based learning with the TEL team and combine with my interest in AR and VR technologies and apply them to immersive learning excites me.
I joined the team as a Learning Technologist and my areas of focus are instructional design, educational technology, and graphic design. I have a Master's in E-learning Design and Development. I am an experienced graphic designer, having run the in-house design studio within the Centre of Teaching and Learning at the Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, this position entailed serving the greater university community with their design needs. This required collaborating with academics to enhance their educational material as well as partnering with faculties to promote their programmes. Prior to this position, I lectured in the Department of Visual Arts. Before joining Nelson Mandela University I worked for two advertising agencies where I gained a strong background in advertising and branding. During this time, I worked with a range of large and well-recognised companies in the private sector, including Coca-Cola Sabco, Volkswagen South Africa, Continental Tyres, Algoa FM, Woodlands Dairy, and Eveready, to name a few. I am enthusiastic about how instructional designers can collaborate with lecturers to improve the learner experience at a module development level and enjoy using my graphic design skills to visually enhance course materials.
Hi, I am an instructional designer and digital learning specialist with a background in music and audio-visual technologies. I have previously worked as a Digital Learning Officer with the Royal College of Music (RCM) and as a Senior Learning Technologist at the University of Galway. My areas of interest and expertise include podcasting, audio-visual production, XR, and instructional design.
I am an instructional designer with a background in film and animation
I achieved a Masters in E-Learning Design and Development from MTU in 2023. Other qualifications include a BA in English Literature and French and a certificate in Model-making and Design. I love stories in all forms: books, film, theatre, art , new media. The constant challenge of being an instructional designer is how best to tell the story - visually and verbally. My role at MTU includes graphic design, technical support and content creation.
As an N-TUTORR Digital Transformation Administrator, I leverage my diverse skillset to support the learning management team and collaborate with university teams to enhance the student experience with respect to systems and processes.
In my previous role, as a Communications officer at MTU, I developed and implemented communication strategies across various platforms, including the University's intranet, email newsletters, and social media. I collaborated with cross-functional teams to deliver information effectively and ensure consistent messaging across internal channels.
I have achieved a Masters in Social Policy (UCC) and most recently a certificate in Digital Marketing (MTU). Throughout my academic journey, I've actively engaged in social policy advocacy and activism, which fuelled a deep commitment to social justice and ensuring equitable access to quality education. This dedication fuels my passion to support initiatives, like N-TUTORR, that empower students through improved access to technology and learning resources.
