AV Training Supports for Research Proposals
Category: Video guides / Informational Videos
Summary: The project has worked to develop a series of video resources to support existing training provided for postgraduate (PG) candidates developing research proposals. It has mostly focused on developing outline proposals in both Masters and PhD programmes prior to the external review process. These videos have been filmed, edited and are complete with the exception of the inclusion of the required branding (Jan 2024).
While the core principles that define research in science, engineering, design, art and music are consistent, communication standards vary significantly. The video resources target mandatory and elective PG training modules such as ‘Graduate Research Skills’ and provide illustrative case examples for proposals that are discipline specific. While the content elucidates the standard requirements of research proposals such as the hypotheses; research questions; methodologies, and the planned contribution to knowledge, the videos aim to augment existing training by providing guidance on proposal standards that are discipline specific.
These videos have minimal restrictions as per the CC licence and can be shared freely, or used in other teaching content, with attribution provided for the creators. The modular nature of these chunked videos makes them particularly adaptable.
Since the project aimed to support existing materials for PG training the videos have been designed in bite sizes to provide maximum re-usability across PG and L8 final year programmes where project proposals are integral. While focused in the first instance on helping improve research training for staff and students (L8, L9, L10) in MTU the content can also be made publicly available supporting candidates initiating outline proposals prior to the application stage.
