TEL Reusuable Learning Resources (RLR) Project
In the academic year 2023/2024, the Department of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and the E-learning Development Services Unit (EDSU) at Munster Technological University (MTU) first launched the Reusable Learning Resources (RLR) initiative; a university-wide project focused on the creation of media-rich, open educational resources (OERs) across a diverse range of projects. Supported by SATLE funding (Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement), this initiative aligns with MTU's commitment to fostering innovation in teaching and learning.
2025 saw TEL and EDSU recognised for the RLR project by the Higher Education Authority’s (HEA) prestigious Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement (SATLE) Impact Award, which recognises initiatives that have demonstrated significant impact in national priority areas including digital transformation, academic integrity, and education for sustainable development. The current, 2024/2025, stream expands on the original initiative by offering both annual and multi-annual projects.
Key Highlights from 2024/2025: In this, the second year, the project expanded to support both annual and multi-annual projects. By the second year, the overall call for proposals has now seen over 60 high quality applications, and the 2024/2025 stream of the initiative has funded 4 annual and 4 multi-annual projects.
Key Highlights from 2023/2024: The RLR initiative was part of MTU's allocation from the SATLE fund, supporting multiple strands, including Reusable Learning Resources, Learning Enhancement Projects, and Reimagining Assessment and Feedback Together. A total of 40 applications were received, with 20 projects funded.
Publications: The 2023/2024 initiative led to the development of some notable work that went on to be showcased and shared at a number of conferences and fora, including the international OER conference held in MTU in March 2024 and the Association for Learning Technology (ALT) conference held in Manchester in September 2024.
Guiding Principles: The initiative was built on key principles to ensure the creation of adaptable and effective learning resources:
Open Licensing: All resources are openly licensed for maximum accessibility and reusability.
Interoperability: Ensuring compatibility across different learning platforms.
Modularity: Resources are designed to be easily adapted and customised.
Accessibility: Resources were developed to be inclusive and accessible to all learners.
Pedagogically Sound: Resources are grounded in effective teaching practices.
The RLR initiative showcased the importance of partnerships, both internally within MTU and externally. Academic staff collaborated with learning technologists to create high-quality, pedagogically sound resources, while partnerships with external experts, such as SMEs, vendors, and content creators, enriched the overall project quality.
